Prepare console storage for GTA 6 without guessing its size

Make space for GTA VI with a practical PS5 and Xbox storage checklist. Learn which drives can run console games and why the final install size matters.

Short answer

Check your console's free space and plan where GTA VI will install, but wait for a published download requirement before choosing a capacity target. The official GTA VI page checked for this guide does not give an installation size.

Use the installation requirement, not a rumoured number

A drive's advertised capacity is not a substitute for checking available space on your console. PS5's Storage screen separates the space used by games, media and saved data. Start with that measurement instead of assuming an empty drive or reserving a particular number of gigabytes from a social-media post.

The final installation and any later update can present their own space request. Keep your plan flexible until the console or an official product listing supplies the relevant figure. This is preparation advice, not a measured GTA VI download or patch size.

Archive storage and playable storage serve different jobs

An external drive can free room without being the place you launch a current-generation game. These are the platforms' general storage rules; no GTA VI installation has been tested for this guide.

Make room before buying another drive

On PS5, Games and Apps inside Console Storage is the place to remove installed software. Sony says purchased games can be downloaded again from the library. Saved-data management is a separate area, so choose the intended data category rather than treating every storage item as interchangeable.

For an M.2 upgrade, check Sony's complete compatibility and installation guide, including cooling and physical dimensions. Formatting erases existing drive contents. If moving a few unused games solves the space problem, an upgrade may be unnecessary; decide after checking the real requirement.

Your next steps

  1. On PS5, open Storage in Settings and record the space available on your intended installation drive.
  2. Move games you are not using to suitable storage, or remove their installed game data through Games and Apps.
  3. Check drive compatibility before purchasing expansion storage or formatting an existing drive.
  4. When GTA VI's download requirement appears, compare it with the console's actual available space and follow any additional space request.
